A Few Classic Stories

Writing Journal: Sick as a dog this week. Getting a little bit better now, but still wobbly. Worshipping at the altar of NyQuil, I am. And let me tell you, when you're sick, the last thing you want to write is a sex scene. Talk about not being in the zone... Perhaps not surprisingly, progress on The Adjusters #30 was minimal, but progress was nevertheless achieved. And it looks like I'm painting myself in a corner too, where I may have to write a piece in the style of Alexandre Dumas. You'll see what I mean when we get there, assuming I don't come to my sense before then and edit the whole thing out of existence.

As I promised at the beginning of the year, let me start pulling stories out of the bag marked Classic Stories. What's a classic story? Beats me. My own personal definition is a story that I've run into a while back—five years or more?—and that I've seen discussed and praised online amongst both cognoscenti and amateurs alike.

Today, here are three classic stories under the general theme of turning a girl into a slave pretty much against their will through manipulation of some kind.

First up, Terri Madison's Second Place: “Terri and Danielle have been rivals all of their lives, competing in love and competing in business, with Terri coming out on top most of the time. Until one day Danielle fights back and turns Terri into a docile slave." A wonderfully twisted story by a master of the genre. Terri is just wonderful and writes humiliation like no one else. She deserves her own Author Spotlight, that's for sure.

Second up, Hunter's Samantha Learns her Place. No official description, but it's basically the story of poor Samantha, a cheerleader who attracts the attention of Hunter Smith, who manipulates her into basically doing his bidding, slowly turning her into the perfect little pleasure toy. Psychologically very dark, and altogether satisfying when you're just in that sort of mood. As far as I can tell, Hunter has not written anything else, which is a damned shame.

Third up, Ninja Turtle's Cheerleader Picture: “The story of a high school cheerleader slowly turned into a bimbo sex slave slut.” As with the description, as with the story. The language will not win any literary contest, but it's nonetheless effective. The story is surprisingly similar to Hunter's story above, both in premise and in theme, but it digs a much deeper hole for its protagonist. Psychologically even darker, I would say, although I realize the qualification is highly subjective. It's an interesting exercise to compare and contrast the two developments.

A Couple of Mind-Control Stories

Writing Journal: I wrote most of the sex scene in The Adjusters #30 before realizing that it just wasn't working. Not because it wasn't a decent sex scene, but because it was too dark. And after several episodes in a row where the sex is twisted and borderline psychotic, I think that the epilogue to Book II should have something sweet and uplifting. And thus back to the drawing board, trying to figure out who can get it on in such a happy-go-lucky kind of way. Thankfully, the rest of the episode is more or less writing itself.

There was an issue with the font for comments these last few weeks, and it seemed to originate with the changes Blogger made a couple of weeks ago to the comment system—in case you did not notice, we now appear to have a limited form of threaded comment system, where we can respond to comments. Anyways, I found a way to “fix” the issue, although the fix is not perfect—while I can reduce the font size in the comments, I cannot easily change the interline spacing. Still, it's a bit better now. Not perfect, but better. I'll keep working on it.

Two not-so-recent mind-control stories came across my radar this week, one that I had read before, the other not.

Let's start with the first one, by A Strange Geek. Here's The House at the End of the Street: “Four teens find a mysterious house that promises to fulfill their deepest, darkest desires and grant them great power. But how far will they go in their quest for this power? Will they turn from the darkness in time, or succumb to it like others before them? Or perhaps, the ‘house’ has its OWN agenda.” There are some nice twisted bits in there—and some nice very twisted bits. What would you do if you had powers over someone else is the basic question being asked. And when you ask that question of teenagers full of hormones and psychological issues, you get... well, you get what you expect you get.

If you like that story, then check out the sequels. Because it turns out The House at the End of the Street is the first story in a series, which I didn't know about, The Town Of Haven series: “This small town located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, is the site of a convergence of lines of mystical energies. These energies give rise to all manner of strange and sometimes supernatural events, and have factored into the checkered past of this otherwise sleepy town. This town holds many secrets, and those that dare to discover them are forever altered by their experience.” Now, I haven't read the other stories in the series—I started on Now This Won't Hurt a Bit, but it did not quite grip me the way the first story did. Part of it may have had to do with the extended cast of characters, which is always tricky to manage, and I probably was reading it a bit too quickly. I'll give it another shot in the future. And try to learn the lesson that overwhelming the reader with multiple characters and multiple point of views in every episode is dizzying.

The second story is Fret Pearson's Neon Pink: “Keiko likes a good mystery, but can she discover who is attempting to enslave her best friend Janey without becoming a slave herself?” A very well-written story structured as a classical murder mystery (except with no murder), which is emphasized by the protagonist herself in the second paragraph of the story: I was reading an Agatha Christie in the bleachers when it happened. This story is all about control and slow brainwashing. The sex is pretty subdued, but the result is still arousing. A nice quiet read.

Weekend Random Links

Writing Journal: Whoopee doo! Finished the first draft of The Adjusters #29 this week, at about 15000 words. It's rough and will need much work, particularly with pacing, but it more or less captures what was in my head, which makes me glad. Now onto #30, the epilogue of Book II, and in particular a scene I've been looking forward to writing for several months now.

A few weeks late, but take a look at IO9's look back at the year 2011 in NSFW.

I'd have loved to be a fly during the meeting of the ad execs that thought up this breast cancer prevention campaign. (Via Violet Blue.)

Talking about comics, you may want to check out Prime Mover's illustrated stories with strong mind-control themes.

And while we're talking free erotic 3D comics, check out RKShooter's Milly series, which is not about mind control, but partly about submission, and partly about just plain old kinky sex.

I've talked about Undum before, a Javascript-based system for writing hypertext fiction. Here's Hypedyn, a Java-based system for doing something similar. I still prefer the look of Undum, though.

I'm too young to remember vintage men's mags, but I have to admit that these pages are simply outstanding—and you gotta love the loglines!

Maria Ozawa in a Japanese remake of Species? You better believe it. Looks bad enough to be good.

The best lingerie ad in the world?

The real reason for the Fall of the Roman Empire, according to Oglaf.

Closing with the story of the week, a nicely written dark tale of abduction and mind control by VoiceOfUnreason called Becoming Marie: “Kidnapped, and... changed.” How's that for a short and sweet description? Looking forward to many more chapters. (Via JN on MCForum.)

Two Dark Stories To Start Off The Year

Writing Journal: And we are back for a new and exciting year. May it suck less than the last one. I randomly hacked on The Adjusters #29/30 over the Holidays, whenever family and social obligations permitted. And after more than 25000 words written (that's a quarter of a novel in some genres—hard to believe—I mean I know I overwrite but still...) I think I know where to split off #29 and #30. I was hoping that a plum little cliffhanger would show up, and lo and behold, out of nowhere, one did.

There wasn't a lot of smut reading over the Holidays, sadly, but I can still report on a couple of interesting stories over at Djian Understories.

The first story is Mattwatt's Vanessa and the White Knights: “Vanessa, assistant dean of admissions at a modern university, is grabbed by a group of students called the White Knights and added to their slave gallery.” A nicely twisted dark story, complete with domination, slavery, dogs, and beautiful girls being passed around like property. And it weirdly enough still manages to be romantic. Well, in a way—a somewhat twisted depraved way. This is good old trashy fun.

The second story is Ug's Victoria's Blackmail: “Photos are discovered of a teacher, and used against her.” (The story is also hosted on Literotica). I have a soft spot for blackmail stories, as any of you that has spent any amount of time on this blog knows, and this one has not only blackmail but blackmail of a hot young high-school teacher. This story is ongoing, but the buildup in the first four chapters is fantastic. Not too slow, not too fast, and the author distills the goodies like a sadistic booze runner during the prohibition.

There's a long smut tradition of abusing teachers using blackmail and other forms of coercion. I mentioned H. Dean's Object of Affection in the past. Pamela, one of my favorite authors, has one as well, called The Last Class: "A submissive high school teacher is so taken with one of her students that she can't stop herself from giving him her body, her will, her very life," although it's less about coercion and more about submission. There are other stories on that theme, of course, including a couple of mind-control stories that I remember, but I cannot retrace them easily right now. Any suggestions of stories to read on that subject posted in the comments will be highly appreciated, certainly by me, and probably by others as well.

Station Identification: Smutty Footnotes

What's This?

You are visiting Smutty Footnotes, a blog that I maintain since August 2010, the successor to an online journal I started back in 2008. This is my little soapbox, which serves several roles. First, it's where I talk about and publish the smut that I write. Second, it's where I point out interesting smut that I've run across in my eternal quest to find the most arousing fiction out there. Third, it's where I wax lyrical about random smut-related tidbits that I encounter both online and offline. Oh, and in case that was not clear: yes, this is very much a smut-focused blog.

All together now: “Smut! Smut! Smut!...” (to the tune of Monty Python's “Spam”, of course).

I try to post twice a week, once in the middle of the week (Wednesday) and once on the weekend (Sunday), and I tend to post late at night. Most of my posts have a portion I pompously call my Writing Journal, where I comment opaquely on what I'm writing at the moment. Between you and me, it's really therapy, as it gives me a sense that I'm actually getting stuff done.

And Who Are You Anyways?

Glad you asked. I go by the name Bulgroz The Third here and a few other places. I have been writing smut since the late nineties, but did not inflict it on the world until 2008. To be fair, little of what I wrote before then is digestible in any way, so you have lost nothing. My stories tend to involve mind control and distinctive power dynamics between characters.

Yes, I do have a life, and no, it is not all sex all the time. I wish. No, what you get here and in my writing is a projection of my personality onto the smut plane. Not unexpectedly, it yields a singularly distorted view of yours truly, but one that maintains some of my real-life characteristics. Chew on that.

So What Can We Expect For 2012?

Excellent question. My current running serial The Adjusters continues with monthly episodes, published the first of the month when I'm not running late because of this or that. I have a few ideas for stories that may or may not see the light of day in the next twelve months, as usual. I sometimes participate in the monthly writing contests over at MCForum, which I consider a pleasant distraction. (My story Go Where the Arid Winds Blow is my latest contest submission.)

I'll keep on pointing you to interesting smut that I encounter here and there. I'm also thinking of delving into the past and presenting classics from the last three decades, classics that I have read and loved, going back to the early days of Usenet and alt.sex.stories. There's a lot of amazing stuff out there that you may not know and may find interesting.

Beyond that, anything specific you folks would like to see on this blog in the coming year?

New Story: The Adjusters #24

A day late, but here is January's episode of The Adjusters, “The Spring Amateur Show”, wherein we realize that Daniel and Jackson may have more in common than they originally thought.

As usual, comments welcome.

I'll also remind you that we have a Speculation Thread available for discussion. (A thread which I read but do not comment on.)

The Adjusters #24 - The Spring Amateur Show

"Now, be honest—is there something going on between you two?"

Serena was staring straight at Daniel, the look on her face the one he
called her inquisitor look. Beside him, Cindy giggled. Serena managed
to keep a stern expression for several seconds before breaking into a
grin herself. Daniel shook his head. Women, he thought.

"It's complicated," he said, finally.

"He's right—it actually is," added Cindy.

Serena looked from one to the other and back, waiting for them to add
more details, but neither provided any. "Fine," she said. "Be like
that. But you watch out for him," she told Cindy. "He's a handful."
Turning to Daniel, she softened somewhat. "Seriously, I'm glad you're
moving on, Daniel. I know it was hard to lose Jenn like that, but I'm
a firm believer in straightening up and punching life in the balls,
you know?"

Daniel did not respond. He had known Serena a long time now, and she
had always treated personal relationships as entirely malleable. And
romantic relationships, well, they were not something to get invested
in too deeply. She had had a string of boyfriends over the years, none
of which her friends ever bothered to learn the name of, since she
would move on faster than you would sneeze in a black pepper
factory. She and Daniel had not really talked about what had happened
with Jenn, aside from that violent fight months earlier when Daniel
had first received the DVD that Biff sent. One reason for this lack of
conversation was that Serena had been difficult to get a hold of. And
given what Daniel had learned from Cindy—that Serena was essentially
a toy for use by the Delta Iota Kappa brothers—well, that went a long
way towards explaining her absences. Daniel stared at his friend,
trying to imagine her with those frat boys that she always said she
disliked so much.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everybody!

May your 2012 exceed your expectations.

I'm running a bit behind on finishing the edits on The Adjusters #24, what's with all the shenanigans surrounding the Holidays. Give me an extra day, and I'll have it out to you tomorrow night.

To pass the time, I'll point you to the now finished story by W. L. Telford, Blanco y Negro, about a husband that sells his wife to a Panamanian brothels. (I first mentioned it six months ago.) Note that the link points to a version of the story that first presents you the first four chapters before repeating those first four chapters and then giving you the final two. Just pay attention and you'll be able to figure it out. The story's worth it, though. Nice, dark, and cathartic.
