New Story: The Adjusters #46

(Believe it or not, but it's here. Let's not discuss the elephant in the room...)

Here is November's installment of The Adjusters, “Awake”, wherein Jenn finds herself awake but not crazed for the first time in a long time.

As usual, comments welcome.

I'll also remind you that we have a Speculation Thread available for general discussion. (A thread which I read but do not comment on.)

The Adjusters #46 - Awake

“How are we doing today, sweetie?”

I startle at the odd lilt in Doctor Agnieska’s voice. Of course, any startling is in my head. My body remains motionless, subdued by the drugs.

Doctor Agnieska is almost always cheerful when she comes in for her twice-a-week visits, but today her voice is strained. Like she is hiding something, a reticence, and underneath that reticence, a fear. You get good at picking things up from voices when you can’t see, can’t move, can’t talk. Doctor Agnieska is scared. I don’t know why she’s scared, and while that ignorance should translate into a fear of my own, the bliss that envelops me ensures that all I feel is an intellectual, almost academic, apprehension.

My name is Jennifer Hansen, and I spend my days with my body knocked out but my mind free to wander. Doctor Agnieska is the one doctor who comes in and checks up on me regularly.

Next month: “Jennifer's Plan”.

  1. Totally worth the wait, great chapter. So it seems that Dan and San would stick with each others chicks, interesting. Wounder if there are any loopholes in Jen's conditioning, and if San is smart enough to find them...

  3. Real glad you liked it. It was difficult to write, difficult to edit, and one of those installments where I can't figure out after the fact whether it's any good...

    1. You shouldn't worry about whether or not an installment is any good or not although I am aware that's not going to happen. I know because I do it also. In your case I think that if you feel that way, Its going to turn out great like this installment did. I am not a writer so I can't pick it apart that way but I am an avid reader so when I say you hit all your marks, you did. Keep going and the first is Sunday so good luck. :)

  4. Wow, loved this chapter and it was well worth the wait and demonstrated why Bulgroz is such an exceptional writer and story teller. Loved the emotions Jennifer experienced as she started to come out of it--the worry, the angst, the memories the sadness and fear. It is so refreshing having emotions be a part of stories rather than just action. Loved the last line about being sold. Hopefully this plays a part in the next chapter, if not sold then at least the sale process.

Loved the memories of Biff and how he view her when she was captured. Still fascinated by this aspect.

  6. And looking forward to episode 46 next week ... Fascinated to see if you can bring it all together when it's all done. But enjoying the journey so far.

You know, sometimes I wonder the same thing :)

(I do have a plan. Sounds like a good one. But time (and you all) will tell.)

    2. We your fans have no fear that you will do what needs doing. This last installment is the best since Book 2 by far, however I do understand the worry that it won't be well received like I said above. So far your plans have been fantastic, the story has so many directions it could go I for one am very intrigued by it and am eager for it to continue. For Jenn to escape, for Daniel to find her, for Adcorp to be further explained and on and on.

  7. Probably my favourite chapter since Book 2 - just so vividly good and filled with 'payoff' moments. Well worth the wait, though... 3 days till the next one. :D

    2. A little bit behind. But not three-weeks worth this time. (He says, crossing fingers...)

And thanks for the kind words, Andrew. Appreciate it.

  8. From danny123

So we now know what is going through Jenn’s mind. She is still the sly one, quickly realizing that she needs to lay low until she can figure out who to trust and what the dynamics of the situation really is. I love the inner dialog that is going on in her mind about Daniel. Part of her prays, hopes that he is still trying to find her and part of her saying that given what he knows about her (she thinks he has seen all the videos ,etc.) that he has moved on. Have we also been given a clue that there is a beginning of a drug that offsets some of the drugs used to program her? I am most curious to see how her relationship with Sanderson will develop and how that will resolve itself once Daniel is back in the picture. Does she still love Daniel, without a doubt? But people move on if they feel that the one they love has also done so. Were also given a clue as to how Daniel will locate her, i.e., the iPad and her stories. Thanks for giving more detail about Jenn’s programming. I always find these fascinating. With the possibility of her being sold, I am not sure how that would be done and hidden, will move the time frame up as far as her leaving the institution. I am eagerly waiting on the next installment.

    1. I think everyone one should go back and read the 2nd Charlie episode. I think it will clear up a couple of points.

    2. All excellent questions, Danny123.

And yes, the 2nd Charlie episode... Which should make one wonder when exactly Jenn is going to write it, and perhaps more importantly, send it off to the magazine.
