Here is December's installment of The Adjusters, “A Wedding and a Lead”, wherein our Special gains a new Vessel for his Ministry, and Daniel discovers what may be a promising lead.
As usual, comments welcome.
I'll also remind you that we have a Speculation Thread available for general discussion. (A thread which I read but do not comment on.)
The Adjusters #35 - A Wedding and a Lead
(Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Two months ago.)
He sneaks into the church with all the other guests--it is a large
wedding, the parish church struggling to contain everyone--and nobody
notices him.
That is a certain advantage with large groups, near anonymity--nobody
gives him a second glance. But it has the potential of making it more
difficult to find the bride. There is still an hour to go before the
official start of the ceremony, so he is not worried. Not yet.
He will have to venture in the back of the church. Not a problem. He
heads in that direction, and begs an elderly lady who shots him an
initially distrusting glance for directions to the nearest
restroom. She finally takes pity on him and walks him down a small
recessed hallway.
It is a single-person restroom, which is what he hoped for. He locks
the door, then buttons his shirt all the way up after sliding on a
clerical collar. A quick turn of the comb, and he feels confident he
can pass off as a minister. A distinct advantage of religion--a
singular respect for authority figures. He grins to himself in the
mirror--if he cannot pass off as a clergyman, he has little business
with godhood, does he not?

Next month: “No Wedding but a Suspect”.
Ended up changing the posted title of this installment, based on the changes I made to the second half. I'll need to reconstruct a couple of installments' worth of buffer so that this doesn't happen again.
ReplyDeleteI'll go nap and take care of my cold now...
could this be the specials mistake? the boon wasn't for the husband...and when he made it was for her pleasure with her mouth but not only for the husband.
ReplyDeletenot shocked that daniel picked up on the clue of the wedding planner. like how jenn is slowly being mentioned.
can't wait for the breakthrough next chapter.

ReplyDeleteSome suggested correctons:
my page 37 - "Brisecoeur piped up on the screen. "You can that again..." Needs to add say - You can say that again.....
my page 40 - some unusal symbols are printing. "Hey, at least that's all he's doing. Not to minimize it, but preimA"ment, the women don't remember what has happened to them and deuxiA"ment, he's.....
my page 43 - "Daniel nodded. "I'll call Natalie Grifford and see if I can get that info from here." from her.
Comments and thoughts to come later.
This one feels like something is missing in the end, or maybe I just expected more action from or "for" our detectives :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the feedback, folks. And yes, starting to come out at the other end. Nasty bug going around my neck of the wood these days.
ReplyDeleteIndeed—some of the action in #35 was pushed back to #36. Partly because #35 was already running long, but also because in retrospect it really belongs in #36.

ReplyDeleteI find a couple of things interesting about the special (I am assuming it is Greg). First is that he has a lot of self-control. He has not done anything to Elizabeth, as far as we know. Even when engaged in sexual activity with her, his touch is not activated. Second, he does not seem to stay in contact with his “vessels”. All he seems interested in is getting them pregnant. Third he always leaves a “benefit” for the groom. This benefit is a sexual act that the groom loves, but his bride is reluctant to perform.
I am hoping that with the upcoming confrontation with the “special”, we will learn more about the corporation and what they do with them. If Daniel is to help Jenn, he will need to begin expanding his knowledge about the research being done on the specials. It would seem that the computer from the late, great doctor may advance this, as he seemed to be further along on how to program the girls than the corporation. If memory serves me right, Cindy has a copy of Radhu’s research into all of this and could turn out to be how Daniel begins putting the pieces together.
As always looking forward to the next update.
Wishing you and all of your readers a very happy and safe holiday.
I'll answer the bit that won't spoil the next few installments. We (and Daniel) will lean more about ADCorp in the soonish future, especially the relationship with Doctor Cargyle. And yes, Cindy has a copy of all the Radhu discovered. Whether that helps or not remains to be seen.
