New Story: The Adjusters #41

Here is June's installment of The Adjusters, “The Craven-Wilford Institute”, wherein we reconnect with Jennifer Hansen.

As usual, comments welcome.

I'll also remind you that we have a Speculation Thread available for general discussion. (A thread which I read but do not comment on.)

BOOK IV — RUNNING TO STAND STILL

The Adjusters #41 - The Craven-Wilford Institute

Richard Sanderson donned his uniform, trying to relax. His first day of his first job out of college—some anxiety was not only understandable, but expected. He had a few nursing internships under his belt, of course, like everyone else, but internships were different. One was mentored, supervised.

But this was the real thing. He was alone, left to his own devices. Sink or swim. So this is what independence feels like, he thought.

He looked at himself in the mirror in the employees’ lounge, which was lined up with lockers on one side, and a couch, a few tables, and a small bookshelf on the others. A large window against one wall let light in and offered a view of a pleasantly wooden area—filled swampland, he had been told. He practiced making relaxed friendly faces even as he checked to make sure his shirt was buttoned correctly. Focusing on details had always been his trick to control anxiety at exams and public functions throughout his life. And this is what it felt like—an exam, doubled with a quasi-public function.

He looked again at his blonde hair, unable to quite get used to how short it was, the shortest he had ever worn it. It looked good, he agreed with the hairdresser he had seen just the day before, who had suggested the new length as a way to mark his starting the new phase of his life. His shoulder-length locks had fallen ominously around him while she worked, like a rain washing away the past. He wondered again, as he had for the past day, how Felicity would have reacted at seeing his hair. She had loved his long curls.

  1. Finally updated! I've been checking this blog for days now hoping for a new update.

The story is... well, I suppose better than the Charlie ones, but I thought the entirety of Book IV was going to be in Jenn's perspective?

Jenn is the character I am the most invested in throughout this whole series. After her absence in the entirety of Book III, I've been really looking forward to her return Book IV, and it's kind of disappointing that this chapter doesn't really revolve around her, and she ends being more of a cameo in what was supposed to be her story. :(

  2. So, we have a "real version" of events described in Jenn's story? Interesting :)

  3. interesting start to book 4. though i don't think we needed the last 2 chapters of charlie since this seems to be about the same. clearly sanderson and guiteriz will be fleshed out a bit as characters and perhaps the good doctor.

benefit of posting on june 6- only 24 more days to #42. :)

  4. From danny123

    First some corrections.

My page 1 – His shoulder length hair had fallen aminously around him while she worked. Should be while he worked.

My page 6 – Sanderson had nothing to respond; Beatrice merely looked at him… It doesn’t flow right to me. Maybe, Sanderson had no response;…..

To me this was a tie in chapter. It tied in the Charlie chapters and even the chapters about the specials. We are seeing the results of what happens to the victims of the specials. I also found it interesting that Jenn is somewhat in the same shape that Marjorie was when we left her. Maybe another tie in? I am not convinced that what is happening to the women at the center will happen to the DIK girls or to Jenn. The DIK girls have to be triggered and when not triggered they go about their normal lives. The effect of the specials seems to be a permanent condition. Of course Jenn is now similar to but, I feel, not the same as the other women. Insanity is a distinct possibility here. I was pleased to see that I was not too far off in my interpretation of the Charlie stories.

While Jenn is a major interest of mine, my curiosity lies with Daniel and the ADCorp.

  5. So my guess was correct about Jenn. The intresting part is like Danny123 says it mor of a tie in between the charlie story and the real world daniel is in. I also like the fact we see what happens to women effected by specails. Now im intriged as to what happens next thur the charlie story we know that Jenn and i persume sanderson escape but it could be mouse and how or will Daniel or Sam find Jenn

Great Job BT3 keep it up

  6. @ danny: your thoughts are interesting. Sounds like jenn is sedated. Not sure if Majorie was or just had a breakdown.

I wonder if this blue ward is really for the victims of specials. Shawbank mentioned they eventually go insane and here we have a ward of nymphomaniacs going insane. If that's the case why doesn't ADCorp know about the institute? And if they do, why aren't they able to connect Jenn to Daniel?

    good chapter bt3

Marjorie did have a breakdown. Just thought it was interesting that Jenn reacted the same way Marjorie did when someone start playing with her. Not sure if ADCcorp knows about the institute or not. If I remember correctly, they were not overly concerned about the victims, just the specials. ADCorp also believes that Jenn is dead thanks to O'Neil. The only reason the DIK girls were taken was so they could study the good doctor's work. It would appear the next chapter will be about her escape and I too think it will be with Sanderson.

  8. question for bt3: how did jenn write the last version of the charlie story seeing as she is sedated most of the time unless she writes it after she escapes from the institute with either mouse or sanderson?

  9. Thanks for the feedback, folks. I'm always nervous before a new book, since it's often a change of direction/style, and it's not always clear how people will react.

Not going to do a point by point response, but addressing some of the general comments:

Book IV is indeed about Jenn. But we're picking her up when she's out of it, so I need to play a bit with perspective. Don't worry, she's the central character of that book.

And yes, Book IV is related to the Charlie story. We'll see if that works. (And to address met19's question, we will indeed find out when Jenn writes her. It's not a plot hole—well, not unless I screw up.)

I'm going to withhold commenting about other points to avoid spoilers. But I like how you all think.

  11. Don't worry, the serum has not been forgotten. The story line just hasn't cycled back to it yet...

  12. I know Jenn is going to be the main focus of this book, but i hope you keep Dainel and Adcorp around. Also i feel like you've abondend Cindy, she's the only surviver of the DIK bash and raid and yet now she's hiding in LA. As a reader i hope you go back to the way book two was written in the sense that you had the main plot line being Daniel and then the secondary plot lines being the DIK fraternatiy, DIK Girls, The Doctor, etc. You need more of that in book 4 so we find out about Jenn without losing Daniel, Adcorp, Sam O'Neil. I'll try not to stress too much i know your probably going to get around to it. I just find it hard to be patient. Thanks for the addiction that is the Adjusters

    1. Thanks for the feedback. I don't know if I can pull off something like Book II given the way the characters are currently spread out with the story I have in mind without it being confusing. But I have something in mind for Book V (which I'm plotting in the back of my mind as I'm writing IV) that may just let me touch on everyone.
