Here is April's installment of The Adjusters, “Awry”, wherein a plan is enacted and Jenn is set up as bait.
As usual, comments welcome.
I'll also remind you that we have a Speculation Thread available for general discussion. (A thread which I read but do not comment on.)
The Adjusters #50 - Awry
It’s dark. Middle of the night. I can’t sleep. I’m on my back, on my bed, my arms folded with my hands underneath my head. I’m staring at the ceiling. On the other side of the room, Allison is sleeping soundly, having none of my problems. I envy her for that.
My name is Jennifer Hansen, and by now I should be used to things being out of my control and they should not keep me up at night. Yet here I am, worrying about the fact that in order to get that Pig Gutierrez in trouble enough that he has to abort his plan to sell Mouse to animals who want to take revenge on her, I’m setting myself up bait to get the Pig to molest me so that we can record it and show it to representatives of whatever agencies are funding the Institute that are coming to visit in three days time.
That’s a reasonable plan on paper, but I can’t shake the feeling that something is about to go horribly wrong. And that’s despite having spent all my life being referred to as the optimistic happy-go-lucky one.

Next month: “The Craven-Wilford Institute, Revisited”.
Wow, a stroke, hope we didn't get ourselves a vegetable :0
ReplyDeletewow great chapter. couldn't tell if what they needed was recorded. also think it was a seizure not a stroke. HA goes with stroke, but convulsions goes with seizures. wonder what will happen with Jennie, Cassandra and gang in the next chapter.
ReplyDeleteSo the plan is inacted . . . could the visitors be people from the Adcorp??? Bt3 great doll with the russian doll metaphor when describing Jen/Jennie. Oh no what happens to Jen at the end, could this be the meltdown that Marjorie suffered??? She did get a different version of the program then Marjorie so hopefully she can over come this. Now on to the next chapter.
ReplyDelete*great job*
DeleteThanks for the feedback, folks. Glad you liked the installment.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, that bit at the end was meant to hark back to what happened to Marjorie, way back when... which was never in fact diagnosed as a stroke. (Doctor Cargyle didn't know what had happened, but suspected the programming messed her up because of its... primitive nature.)
It's be pretty sad if I left Jenn a vegetable, though... so I wouldn't worry about it *too* much. Just worry a little bit.

ReplyDeleteWell the plan was to bring attention to the Pig. I think that was accomplished. Given that Mouse was part of the commotion; her disappearance would be noticed immediately. Jenn has not given up hope that Daniel is still looking for her. Good reason to stay where she is. It would seem reasonable that Daniel would sooner or later hear something about the Crave Wilford Institute given the “type” of patients it houses. Daniel should be able to detect that clue about the heroine being in a similar situation as grounds to investigate it. But I feel that the author will not make Daniel’s journey that easy. So we will have to see what other hurdles are placed in his way. Jenn’s collapse, to me, is very different than Marjorie’s. In Marjorie’s case, she was being forced to do something very much against her nature, thus resulting in an internal dilemma that her mind had no way to resolve, thus the collapse. Her basic nature would not allow her to severely hurt another person, but her programming told her she must obey. This resulted in the overload. Jenn was not faced with this. Not sure what exactly caused the collapse. Will have to wait and see. As repetitive as it sounds, I am looking forward to the next installment. Sorry if this rambles, it is late and I wanted to post something before the next installment comes out.
Thanks for the analysis, danny123. Pretty much right on, too.
ReplyDeleteI'll address the collapse, although it may be a few installments before I get to it. But it is indeed related to Doctor Cargyle's technology.
