New Story: The Adjusters #37

Here is February's installment of The Adjusters, “A Wedding and a Confrontation”, wherein Daniel and Shawbank and our Special cross paths.

As usual, comments welcome.

I'll also remind you that we have a Speculation Thread available for general discussion. (A thread which I read but do not comment on.)

The Adjusters #37 - A Wedding and a Confrontation

(Charleston, West Virginia. Now.)

Elizabeth Bowden followed her friend Shelley Caskill into the
abandoned church, ducking in through a recessed side door that was
left unbarricaded. Elizabeth wanted to ask how Shelley knew that the
door was unlocked, but Shelley would have answered to simply trust
her, her answer to every question Elizabeth had asked since they
arrived. And Elizabeth did trust her friend, so she followed.

Once they were inside the church, Elizabeth forgot about asking
questions, and looked up in wonder. It had been more then ten years
she had not come here, but she remembered most of the details, the
high arches, the columns, the attempts at merging a modern decor with
antiquated aesthetics. The pews were still there, empty, gray with
dust, looking forlorn and sad the way empty churches sometimes did, as
if they received their life from the souls of the visiting
congregants.

In her mind, she had half expected Our Saviour's Lutheran Church to be
falling to pieces, the way abandoned buildings did. But of course, it
had been only a decade. She did not know exactly why the parish had
decided to change location and build a new church three blocks
away. The old church was still there, however, still sturdy, still
filled with the memories of her youth. She could imagine turning
around and seeing her mother behind her, silently urging her to keep
walking until they got to her favorite pew, the third one on the far
right when facing the altar. Unbidden, she felt a tear form behind her
eyelids, and she fought it back. What was Shelley up to? Why did she
bring her here?

  1. So no sex scene with our miss hard-ass? Shame that is! Nice twist all in all, explaining lots of things :)

    1. Thanks. And that's true, I guess we have not seen miss hard-ass in action yet...

  2. nice chapter. and nice twists making us think it was the fiancee till the last two episodes. the sex scene was pretty good.

one thing i'm confused about: in book 2 they took all the girls into custody and here they seem to be letting them go. wondering what daniel learned here about specials to help him find Jenn.

Yes, that seems weird, doesn't it? You're not the only one to think so...

You caught me when I concluded that Greg was the special and not the father-in-law. I am not totally surprised that Shawbank did not take the 2 women. They are leaving some lose ends with the girls and Greg. But then, what exactly are they going to say to anyone. Greg saw his finance having sex with her father-in-law and then she attacked him. That two “Federal” agents took him away. They will be lucky if they aren’t committed.

We now know that some women are immune to the Specials. We also have gotten a peek into Shawbank and that this is a crusade for her. It would be a great side story to know what event made her take this path. Or maybe Daniel finds out from someone inside the Corporation.

Currently it appears that the Corporation keeps the specials on “ice’. This strikes me as being odd given that our good Doctor seemed to have been doing research on how the “Specials” do what they do and could it be replicated. In his case he was able to solve that problem. Could there be a secret department within the Corporation working on this that even Shawbank doesn’t know about? I would have to assume so or how will Daniel be able to find a cure for Jenn. Of course, a twist to the story, could be, that Daniel learns how to become a “Special” and then reprograms Jenn. We shall see.

I believe that the next chapter will mark the end of this book. It appears we may be given more information about the Specials, etc. given that there are 3 debriefings. The story continues to keep me interested and guessing what the next twist and turn will be.

    1. Cindy resistance and a fact that she had a guy in the past that used to "change" her in sexual aspect hints at resistance to be some sort of gained immunity from previous encounters with specials...

    2. notice also besides resistance in Shawbank was bitterness in her voice at the very end when discussing specials and the victims. Makes me wonder what is in her past?

    3. I wasn't surprised that the Corporation didn't take Elizabeth and Shelley, either. The only reason they grabbed the girls in Book 2 was to study Doctor Cargyle's practical application of his research.

I'm betting that the wedding in the next chapter will be Elizabeth to Shelley.

    4. Good points raised all around.

I suspect that grabbing the girls and Greg would raise more questions than leaving them be. After all, it's not like they know much.

Shawbank's backstory: indeed, there's something to be told there. We'll learn about it in due time.

    1. Next book should be about her, as I understood from earlier posts...

    2. should be interesting how Bt3 writes Jenn's story. will it be 1st person, from a different pov or her charlie personality.

    3. Confirmed: Jenn is the focus of Book IV.

    4. Another question just occurred to me. Is Carole, Jenn's mother, reappearing in Book IV?

We know that Daniel has been been in touch with her enough to know that she hasn't heard from Jenn, but that's it. Was there a funeral for Jenn? Does Carole still think her daughter is dead? Would she even believe the circumstances of Jenn's ordeal if she was told? I would hope Jenn's own mother would notice there was something hinky with the breakup with Daniel and the subsequent running off with another man.

All of this is interesting to explore while Jenn only has so much agency to drive the narrative.

All this being said, @met19 has hit upon an intriguing idea. A brief look at the story narrated from Jennie's point of view would be cool, assuming if, as I suspect, she is an artificially-created, programmed and dissociated copy of Jenn with her own personality.

There are so many places where the next Book can go. I really can't wait to see how things play out.

A.H. Virgil raises several good points. I am not sure if they will be addressed in the next book or not. There was nothing in Biff's instructions about not contacting her mother. I would venture to say, that it will depend on Jenn's state of mind. Book IV may be the most anticipated one yet. There are so many questions to be answered and I really do not have a clue as to how the author is going to address them or what situations we will find Jenn in. Isn't that the fun, not knowning what is coming next?

  6. Indeed. Or, as the other guy said, “no pressure...” *slightly nervous grin*

Book IV will not answer all your questions, but it will catch us up with Jenn, for sure, among a few other things.

And Carole will reappear again, although exactly where in the story line is still a bit in flux.
