New Story: The Adjusters #17

So that was painful! I'm so sorry about the delay, folks. But between an unplanned trip over the weekend and rewriting a couple of scenes for this episode multiple times because they just didn't want to come out right, my couple of days turned into a full week. And while I'm still not entirely happy with the result, I'm declaring this done for now. Thankfully, the next episodes will be easier to deal with.

Without further ado, here is June's episode of The Adjusters, "Consolations", wherein life goes on, a weak moment is exploited, and a mistake is made.

As usual, comments welcome.

I'll also remind you that we have a Speculation Thread available for discussion. (A thread which I read but do not comment on.)

17 - Consolations

Daniel had not said anything for the last ten minutes. Radhu was
almost surprised to see his friend still there when he looked away
from his computer terminal.

"By the way, I have a few items of note that may be considered
somewhat negative," said the lanky Indian. "First, last week, based on
your judicious hint my facial recognition software fed by a regional
network of surveillance cameras alerted me to a match on Jennifer at
the local airport. A contact of mine has now confirmed Biff's and
Jennifer's presence on a connecting flight from Boston to Saint Thomas
in the Virgin Islands last Sunday. One-way tickets."

Daniel nodded, sipping some Indian liquor he had found in his friend's
cupboards. A week earlier Jackson, through their common friend Cindy,
had passed along the information that Biff was skipping town with Jenn
in tow. "Well, at least that part of the story checks out." He did not
ask Radhu about his contact -- the tall Indian's web of associations
was often frightening to contemplate.

"Also, the acquaintance to whom I loaned Serena's charm bracelet for
analysis has reported his findings."

Next month, episode 18: "A Day in the Life (I)".

  1. I come back from a trip and what do i find...a new episode...how nice!

Feel like this chapter advances the plot a bit more than the others.

    1) Jackson if he remembers (after his hangover) might have a choice to make.

    2) Cindy is becoming more interesting. Wonder if she will tell Daniel- after all "she was going to handle it" but also won't avoid telling Daniel if he asks. Who side is she on? her own? BTW she calls him Dan without being corrected.

    3) Is our Raven hair woman interested in Daniel or the frat? She "bumped" into 1 current DIK girl and a former....

    4) Rhad probably will find the DIK girls existence through his hack...

    5) Like the little touch of the medallion causing Daniel to remember Kyra (who btw is very hot as a submissive). Wonder if he will start to remember our raven haired woman following him around.

  2. @Met, I love the way you think. And yes, to just pick on non-spoilery thing I can respond to, Daniel seems to have resigned himself to Cindy calling him Dan. He does seem to have a soft spot for her.

  3. Is Cindy's motivation going to be explored in the future? I get why she wants to help Daniel, and even use Jenn's absence to her advantage, but what possible reason does she have for protecting the frat and Jackson. Call it whatever you want, but these people kdinapped and *raped* her and are continuing to do so to friends of hers. Why would she give any thought to their well being? It's either an interesting thing to be explored (I hope) or a plot hole/character problem I'm not seeing. Knowing you and your excellent writing, I'm guessing the former?

  4. Blahsz, Some people like to be raped. Especially in this certain way. Especially in smut stories ;)

  5. Domein, fine, but surely she must feel something for the other girls?

  6. @ blahsz- supposedly Cindy liked it- thats what she told Jackson. She is also assuming that Serena and Kyra like it- again told Jackson that in their intoxicated conversation at the end.

Though to be honest- the author implicated that she is smarter than she seems, knows more than she seems and I think she's become way more interesting than Serena. Jenn we all liked in the previous book- but even she was the smart, gorgeous fiancee (or was). Cindy was presented at had undergone "evolved" as a character from average pretty blonde to intelligent, and possibly a crucial character.

  7. would like to see a proper scene with Cindy, either with Daniel or with someone else... I don't think we've had one yet, right?

  8. sorry for the typos during my edit: meant to say that was presented at the beginning as a simple character that has evolved....

on a different note: am looking forward to Jenn's scene during a Day in the Life....

  9. Quick pass at a response.

We will indeed explore what's up with Cindy in the coming episodes. And yes, there are a couple of reasons for her actions and reactions. Yes, she's smart (always was) but she chooses to mostly hide it for reasons that are unfortunately not that uncommon. There will be a proper scene with Cindy, fear not.

As for Serena, she hasn't appeared much these days because she's so busy. When I initially developed Book II, I thought Serena would be the one to take care of Daniel, but it turns out the DIK brothers *really* like her, and don't leave her much free time. So Cindy stepped up to the plate and offered to fill the role. But Serena still has a very important role to play in future events.

  10. Serena taking care of Daniel would have been pretty hot, and he probably would have resisted less.

  11. but that would've been expected. this makes it more interesting....another twist/turn

  12. I quite agree that Serena taking care of Daniel would have been hot too. Not so sure about there being less resistance though, although I haven't really though about it deeply.
