New Story: The Adjusters #23

Here is December's episode of The Adjusters, “Agent Shawbank”, wherein we meet a new player, and Kevin dodges a bullet.

As usual, comments welcome.

I'll also remind you that we have a Speculation Thread available for discussion. (A thread which I read but do not comment on.)

23 - Agent Shawbank

Daniel sat back in his chair, catching some sun, a large coffee before
him. So much for green tea. It's caffeine time, he reflected. The
temperature was a rather normal springtime temperature, giving some
hope that while the winter had been unseasonably warm—to the horror
of winter sports amateurs—the summer might not follow that trend. As
it was, he was nearly alone on the outdoor seating of the Darnell
Café, the campus still relatively quiet in the mid-morning hour.

The events of the previous night kept bouncing around in his head:
running into Jenn at the diner, fighting with Biff, having sex with
Cindy, talking to her afterwards. Amazing how much one can pack into
an evening. He had not yet entirely sorted his feelings about it all,
swimming instead within a numbness that undoubtedly hid deeper,
harsher feelings.

He had run the evening over and over in his head, returning again and
again to the post-coital conversation with Cindy that helped explain
not only the events earlier in the evening, but also much of what had
been happening to him and his friends since the previous autumn. And
after the shock of seeing Jenn again after two months—a Jenn almost
unrecognizable from the one he had know—what had floored him was that
he had been right. Incredibly, he had been right. Jenn was being
manipulated. Controlled. Mastered. Early on, he had latched onto the
mind-control idea simply to avoid looking at the uglier possibility
that she had dumped him because she was scared or confused or simply
did not love him. But that idea, as emotionally attractive as it
was—Jenn not in control of her action, therefore innocent—he had had
to dismiss intellectually as pure science fiction, especially after
looking into available techniques for his senior project. And yet, if
Cindy was to be believed, it was all true. Somehow, the boys of Delta
Iota Kappa had gotten their hands on a frighteningly effective way to
control girls, and had used it to ensnare Cindy, Serena, and now
Jenn. It was crazy. If not for having seen how Jenn herself had
behaved, he would not believe it even now.

  2. so thoughts:
typo: dinner is a meal, diner is a place to eat

    1) daniel/cindy is not aware that jenn actually knows what is going on
    2) opening thoughts of daniel interesting
    3) not shocked the president of university knew about the frat's activities- but how did they ensnare him? what was the bribe-maybe some coeds? The police chief want the daughter of his friend.
    4) Shawbank- FBI sure.....

Plot was advanced slightly- but we kinda already knew raven haired woman (shawbank) was looking for the doctor, but ineresting still is tailing Daniel. I bet Rhad was looking at Serena on his cameras. Kevin is still nervous about Biff and Bernie

  3. Hi again.

That Kevin is nervous about Bernie must be the understatement of the month. How did DIK cover up Bernie's death and why is nobody asking? I mean, DIK tried to keep the lid on Jenn vanishing but nontheless several persons did get involved, the president, police chief and other and that was while some evidence clearly showed that Jenn was alive and well.
Bernie is simply gone and no one cares?

On another topic: I found the following picture and wanted to share it. I would call it Trish, Jennifer and Serena.

  4. Thanks for reading, folks.

    Some comments:

@Met —"not shocked the president of university knew about the frat's activities- but how did they ensnare him? what was the bribe-maybe some coeds? The police chief want the daughter of his friend." > The uni president knows less than he lets on, but he has suspicions. He has his reasons to act the way he does — some of it having to do with the frat having a number of rich alums that he doesn't want to antagonize. He's calculating.

"Plot was advanced slightly- but we kinda already knew raven haired woman (shawbank) was looking for the doctor." > Indeed. the big question is how it's all going to resolve itself. Paths are converging.

@Astardis — good points re:Bernie. Since most of Bernie's social connections are actually to the frat, it's a bit easier for Kevin & co to do damage control. In particular, no one reported him missing. And yeah, there's a story that's been concocted to explain his absence. How long it'll hold water is anyone's guess though, and it's one of Kevin's worries. The poor guy is starting to feel the pressure badly now.

Thanks for the pic! Is the girl in the middle the one from Vampires Diary? (Don't watch the show myself.)

  5. Indeed, she is. Nina Dobrev.

I personally find her even better suited than my aforementioned pick Olivia Wilde, even though she probably wouldn't match Jennifer's mentioned height.

  6. Yes, that always made me wounder, how come investigators are not failing their investigation jobs when their outfit and attitude just screams "HAVE A LOOK HERE I AM A FEDERAL AGENT!!!". I thought they had to blend in more and pretend to be just another coeds or teachers or janitors, etc.

  7. @Astardis — Nina Dobrev. That's right... I'm happy to give you a pass on the height. Reader's license and all that...

@Domein — I suppose it depends on whether the investigation requires deceitfulness or not, but then again, I am not a federal agent. I do know that Agent Shawbank is not trying to be particularly inconspicuous.
